Hammartun lower secondary school has recently been renovated, and is today a modern school situated in the centre of Lillehammer. The school has 41 employees, and approximately 220 pupils, aged 13-16. 9 nationalities are represented. Most nationalities are offered some lessons a week in their native languages.

Before foreign pupils start in Hammartun, they usually attend an introductory course of  about 6 months. On this course they learn some basic Norwegian, they get some general knowledge of the Norwegian society and are shown around in Lillehammer.

The Red Cross offers pupils in Lillehammer help with their homework, contact the school for further information.

Some general information about the Norwegian school system:

 Compulsory education for children

Children living in Norway for more than 3 months, have the right and obligation to go to school. If you have children who are above the age of 6, they must go to school, and they must attend compulsory education for 10 years. You must contact your nearest school or your municipality to register your children at the school.

Basic education

The first 7 years of compulsory education are primary school (barneskolen). The next 3 years are lower secondary school (ungdomskolen). School is free of charge, and girls and boys share classes.

After school hours, children up to year 4 can participate in an afterschool programme (Skolefritidsordningen – SFO), but you have to pay for this. School uniforms are not used in Norway, and primary school children do not receive grades or take exams.

Parents responsibilities

It is important that schools and parents co-operate in the development and education that children receive at school. Parents are responsible for making sure that their children go to school every day, and that they bring the things they need.

Schools expect parents to come to parent-teachers meetings and discussions at school. You will be notified of meetings at the school. “
